How To Make Beeswax Chapstick

Homemade beeswax chapstick is one of the most satisfying things you can make with a little beeswax, and it takes about fifteen minutes. Two main ingredients, a double boiler, and some lip balm tubes, and you’ve got a batch that beats anything at the drugstore. Here’s how.

What you’ll need

  • All-natural beeswax, locally sourced if you can
  • Coconut oil
  • Essential oils (optional)
  • A small glass jar or container
  • A double boiler, or a glass jar set in a pot of hot water
  • Lip balm tubes or containers

The steps

  1. Melt the beeswax in a double boiler, or in a Pyrex glass jar placed in a pot of hot water.
  2. Once the beeswax is fully melted, add the coconut oil and any essential oils. Stir until everything is fully combined.
  3. Take the mixture off the heat and let it cool slightly.
  4. Carefully pour it into your lip balm tubes or containers.
  5. Let the chapstick cool and solidify completely before capping the tubes.
  6. Store it in a cool, dry place when you’re not using it.

Make it your own

This is a recipe that loves tinkering. Adjust the ratio of beeswax to coconut oil to get the firmness you like, more beeswax for a harder balm, more oil for a softer one. You can add shea butter or almond oil for extra moisturizing, experiment with different essential oils to find a scent you love, and stir in a little Vitamin E oil for added skincare benefits. Once you’ve made one batch, you’ll want to start playing with the next.
