Full-Spectrum vs Broad-Spectrum vs Isolate: Which CBD Should You Buy?

Three bottles on a shelf. Same milligrams, same carrier oil, similar price. One says full-spectrum, one says broad-spectrum, one says isolate. Customers ask us to explain the difference just about every week, and the answer fits in one paragraph, so here it is up front.

Full-spectrum keeps everything the plant made, including up to 0.3 percent THC. Broad-spectrum keeps everything except the THC, which gets stripped out. Isolate is pure CBD, a single molecule refined to a crystalline powder, with nothing else along for the ride. The rest of this post is why that difference matters and how to pick.

Full-spectrum: the whole plant

A full-spectrum extract carries CBD plus the plant’s minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBC, CBN and dozens of others in trace amounts), its terpenes, and a legal trace of THC. Federally legal hemp products must stay at or below 0.3 percent THC by dry weight, which is not enough to get anyone high at normal doses, but it is not zero either.

The argument for full-spectrum is the entourage effect, the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes work better together than any one compound alone. The evidence for it is a mixed bag, part solid pharmacology and part marketing, but many people, including a lot of our customers, report full-spectrum products feel more effective at the same milligram count.

The argument against is that trace THC. It can accumulate with heavy daily use, and it can absolutely cause a failed drug test. If your job tests you, full-spectrum is a genuine risk, not a theoretical one.

Broad-spectrum: the compromise

Broad-spectrum starts as full-spectrum and then goes through an extra processing step to remove the THC while keeping the other cannabinoids and at least some terpenes. On paper, it is the best of both worlds. In practice, quality varies. The THC removal process can strip other compounds along with it, so one company’s broad-spectrum is richer than another’s.

Two honest caveats. First, “THC-free” usually means below the lab’s detection limit, not a guarantee of absolute zero, so people facing very sensitive testing situations should know that. Second, broad-spectrum products lean heavily on lab reports to prove what is in them, which brings us to the advice that closes this post.

Isolate: just the molecule

CBD isolate is typically 99 percent or more pure CBD. No THC, no minor cannabinoids, no terpenes, no hemp taste. It is the cheapest per milligram, the easiest to dose precisely, and the most predictable. It is also, by definition, missing everything the entourage argument says matters.

Isolate makes sense if you are subject to drug testing, sensitive to THC even in traces, cooking or making your own products at home, or you simply want to test whether CBD alone does anything for you before paying for fancier extracts.

How to choose

A quick way to think about it:

  • Want the strongest chance of effect and drug testing is not a concern? Full-spectrum.
  • Want the plant’s supporting cast without THC? Broad-spectrum.
  • Tested at work, THC-sensitive, or on a budget? Isolate.

Whichever you pick, dose is a bigger variable than spectrum. A well-dosed isolate beats a token amount of full-spectrum. Start low, something like 10 to 25 mg, hold it steady for a week or two, and adjust from there. If you take prescription medications, especially anything carrying a grapefruit warning, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first, because CBD can slow how the liver clears certain drugs regardless of which spectrum it came from.

The one non-negotiable

Every product, from any company including ours, should come with a third-party certificate of analysis. That lab report proves the CBD content, verifies the THC level, and screens for pesticides and heavy metals. The spectrum label on the front of the bottle is a claim. The lab report in the back is the evidence. If a company will not show you one, put the bottle down and buy from someone who will.
